All around the shape:

The distance around the outside of a shape is called the perimeter.

Perimeter is measured, just like any length or distance, in millimetres (mm), centimetrres (cm), metres (m) or kilometres (km). The table here reminds you of how they are related.

For example, the distance around shape (1):
= 4 + 5 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 7
= 27 cm

The perimeter of a rectangle, such as shape (2), which measures 80 mm by 72 mm:
= (2 × 80) + (2 × 72)
= 304 mm

You can work out the perimeter of a shape on a square grid by counting how many squares it goes around. You are usually told how big the squares are.

Here the squares are 1 cm long.
The perimeter of this shape = 16 cm.
