How big is a shape?

The amount of flat surface a shape covers is called the area of the shape.

If a square is 1 cm long, it is also 1 cm wide.
Its area is 1 square centimetre.
This is written as 1 cm², with a little '2'.

We can count squares to work out the area of a shape.

This shape has an area of 6 squares.

If each square is 1 cm long,
the area of each square = 1 cm²
so the shape has an area = 6 cm²

For each unit of measuring length or distance, there is a unit for measuring area.
