Moving shapes about:

Putting shapes on a square grid makes it easier to show how shapes move; by saying how many squares it will move up or down. left or right.

This is called a translation of the shape.

(1) Here the shape is moving 3 squares to the right.
(2) The original shape is now moving 4 squares to the left.

An easy way to see how a shape moves is to choose a square, and see how that square moves: the square with a yellow cross is the square we are looking at.
The small yellow square shows 'footprints' of how just that square moves.

From that square, we can build the rest of the shape up, to show how the whole shape moves.

(3) Here the shape is moving 4 squares upwards.
(4) The original shape is moving 3 squares downwards.

Look out for how the square with the yellow cross moves!! Follow the 'footprints'!!

You can have shapes moving in both directions, and you have to learn to describe these in words.

Can you work out how many squares left or right, up or down, shapes (1) and (2) have moved from the red shape?
